Is it Safe for you to Drive? Technology Helps Doctors and Patients Get Answers
PLEASANT GAP, Pa. – HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital offers unique technology at their Lewistown and Pleasant Gap outpatient clinics to help determine if someone is safe to drive.
Through best practice and evidence-based technology, the DriveABLE™ Cognitive Assessment Tool helps weigh in on the difficult decision of when, or if, a person should return to driving.
If someone is showing signs of cognitive decline due to a stroke, brain injury, dementia, medications or other medical condition that may compromise driving ability, it is important to establish a responsible treatment plan. That plan can include a comprehensive DriveABLE assessment.
DriveABLE is a stand-alone, push-button touch-screen with advanced software which is highly predictive of actual on-road driving performance. The client is guided by a HealthSouth therapist through six tasks. With the push of a button, the assessment data is scored and the results are presented in an easy-to-read report showing the client’s age-normed performance and an overall score indicating how the client would likely perform in an on-road evaluation.
“Physicians refer their patients to help assess if the patient should continue driving, or if they are able to start driving again following o an injury or an event like a stroke,” says Denise McDonald, M.S., CCC-SLP/L, a speech-language pathologist who administers the DriveABLE assessment to patients at the Lewistown Clinic.
HealthSouth’s Lewistown Outpatient Clinic is located at the Juniata Valley YMCA in Burnham, Pennsylvania. For additional information, call 717 242-5400.
